Drug Fair

State Police Helicopter at
the fair - more photos herel
Each October for the past eighteen years, the Hanover Police Department has organized and produced one of the most successful Drug and Alcohol Awareness Fairs in the country. In 1984, as a result of First Lady Nancy Reagan's Drug Abuse Program, then Lieutenant and now Chief, Paul Hayes organized the first Drug Fair which now reaches tens of thousands of people throughout the area. The program has been extremely successful and in 1988, Chief Hayes was chosen the New England representative to advise a panel comprised of law enforcement and private enterprise delegates on just how a cooperative program could work effectively. The annual Fair, held at The Hanover Mall, has been chosen as the model for a nationwide program. The efforts of Chief Hayes and the Hanover Police Department have been listed in "The Blue Book, Challenges and Opportunites", a nationally distributed guide for drug awareness. The South Shore Drug and Alcohol Awareness Fair at the Hanover Mall has become the showcase for successful anti-drug efforts. For three days in October, Federal, State and Local law enforcement officials, as well as public and private agencies, groupls and individuals, distribute information, conduct demonstrations and host events for youngsters and adults educating them on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The Hanover Police Department is proud of the efforts of the Community Policing Officers from the department and everyone that is involved in this event. |
| Citizens Police
Academy

The Citizens Police Academy is an educational program designed to offer residents and business owners an opportunity to learn about the Hanover Police Department's functions and services. It is in no way designed to train individuals to perform law enforcement functions. The training will consist of classroom instruction, tours, and practical demonstrations by various members of the department. These lessons should give students a more realistic view of the way law enforcement personnel perform their duties within the town. Attendance in at least 7 out of 10 regularly scheduled (range, correctional facility tour and ride along are not required) classes is necessary for the successful completion of the course.
